Organization emphasizes that ‘Life’s About Choice,’ encouraging women to consider adoption as a compassionate alternative to abortion

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As National Adoption Awareness Month begins this November, the pro-life nonprofit organization Save the Storks is encouraging women to rediscover adoption as a life-affirming and empowering choice.

Through its “Adopted” storytelling series, Save the Storks is sharing firsthand accounts from birth mothers, adoptive families and adoptees to highlight how choosing adoption can create lasting hope and healing for everyone involved.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 368,000 children are living in the foster care system on any given day, with over 108,000 eligible for adoption. Despite this need, fewer than four percent of unplanned pregnancies result in adoption, and tens of thousands of children legally free for adoption continue to wait for families. In fiscal year 2023, 50,193 children were adopted from foster care, but 36,411 remained without permanent homes, according to the National Council for Adoption.

“Adoption is one of the most beautiful demonstrations of love and courage,” said Diane Ferraro, CEO of Save the Storks. “When a woman chooses life and places her child with a loving family, she’s making a decision that reflects strength, compassion, and faith in the future. Our mission this month is to remind women that life’s about choice — and adoption is a choice that blesses more than one life.”

The organization’s Adopted series features moving testimonies of people who have experienced adoption from multiple perspectives. These stories include birth mothers who found peace and purpose in their decision, families who have welcomed children into their homes, and adoptees who share how love and acceptance shaped their lives.

Ferraro, who was herself adopted, shared her personal reflection on the power of that choice. “The best gift I ever received was knowing that I was loved,” she said. “I am blessed in life to be loved unequivocally by both my adoptive family and my birth mother. I am a product of both of their gracious choices in life, and in the end, fundamentally, life’s about choice.”

For many women facing unplanned pregnancies, adoption is often overshadowed by the options of abortion or parenting. But Save the Storks aims to change that narrative by educating women about adoption’s modern realities — including open adoptions that allow ongoing relationships and access to resources for both birth mothers and adoptive families.

“Unfortunately, adoption is sometimes portrayed as an outdated or painful process, but today’s adoption landscape is full of support, transparency, and love,” Ferraro said. “We want women to know that they are not giving up a child — they are choosing a family for their child, one that will continue the legacy of love they began.”

Data from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center shows that international adoptions to the United States have declined by 94 percent since 2004, underscoring the growing importance of domestic adoption and the need to raise awareness about it. Meanwhile, Save the Storks continues to partner with accredited agencies to connect expectant mothers with credible, compassionate adoption resources.

The group’s website provides extensive information for women exploring adoption, including pages dedicated to understanding the process, choosing adoption and navigating post-adoption life. Through its “Life’s About Choice” initiative, Save the Storks underscores that every woman deserves to know all her options — and that adoption remains one of the most selfless expressions of love imaginable.

Ferraro added that National Adoption Awareness Month offers an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of family and the dignity of every life. “At Save the Storks, we believe that every woman deserves real choices and real support,” she said. “Adoption is a powerful expression of hope — one that transforms lives forever.”

DEAR READER

We hope this article enlightened and inspired you to stand up for life.

Despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortions are still prevalent in our nation. As a response to the overturning, the media: from the news to entertainment sources to even political figures and celebrities, have pushed abortion as an ongoing agenda, shaping the way this generation thinks and acts. Misinformation is being spread every day, and people are sadly believing the lies.

Our articles and stories aim to tell one thing: the truth.

We know that it is both a blessing and a challenge to understand the reality of abortion, because knowledge incites belief, and belief incites action. But we’re in this together. We believe that we can make abortion unthinkable.

With your support, we look forward to a future where young women are empowered to fight for their own rights: a right to bring life into the world, to be fearless leaders, to be examples of hope, strength, and undeterred resilience. We look forward to a future where life can happen.

If this article strengthened your belief to reach women everywhere with the truth and to let life happen, then please consider helping us extend our reach by making a gift right now. Your gift of just $10 or $20 helps our mission to create a story of hope and empowerment for every woman facing an unplanned pregnancy.

We aim to create a culture that views “pro-life” as equivalent to having empathy and compassion, providing holistic care (before and beyond pregnancy) and education, and most importantly, choosing to speak and act in love. We are pro-life, pro-love, pro-woman, pro-solution.

Don’t just be part of the movement, be part of the solution, and give today.
