Free mobile medical clinics offer care, support and compassion for women facing unplanned pregnancies
PLANO, Texas — America observes Sanctity of Life Month in January, and Save the Storks highlights a message that transcends politics: life begins with care, compassion and access to quality healthcare for women facing unplanned pregnancies.
For more than a decade, Save the Storks has partnered with Pregnancy Health Clinics nationwide to expand access to free, life-affirming medical services, particularly in underserved communities. Through state-of-the-art mobile medical clinics, the organization seeks to meet women at moments of uncertainty with support rather than judgment.
“Choosing life often begins when a woman feels seen, heard and medically supported,” said Save the Storks CEO Diane Ferraro. “Sanctity of Life is not an abstract idea. It is lived out when care replaces fear and isolation with hope and real options.”
According to a report from the Charlotte Lozier Institute, more than 3,000 Pregnancy Health Clinics operate nationwide, compared with about 500 Planned Parenthood locations. Each year, these clinics serve more than 970,000 women and families, perform over 486,000 free ultrasounds, provide more than 160,000 STI and STD tests, and deliver an estimated $350 million in medical, educational and support services at no cost.
Those figures reflect a broad, community-based healthcare network that Save the Storks says plays a critical role in supporting women during unplanned pregnancies and helping families access accurate medical information.
“Life is protected when women are not forced to choose between fear and isolation,” Ferraro said. “By bringing compassionate healthcare directly into communities, we ensure women know they are not alone and that meaningful alternatives exist.”
An abortion occurs approximately every 30 seconds in the United States, according to data cited by Save the Storks. The organization says reality underscores the importance of providing women with access to life-affirming healthcare options, particularly for those facing financial hardship, limited transportation or lack of medical coverage.
Through the support of its donor community, known as the Life Society, Save the Storks equips Pregnancy Health Clinics with mobile medical clinics that provide pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and STI testing at no cost. These clinics operate in more than 100 cities nationwide and are owned and operated by local clinics that understand the unique needs of their communities.
“Mobile healthcare allows us to remove barriers that often prevent women from accessing care,” Ferraro said. “When healthcare comes to them, women are empowered with information, dignity and support.”
One such encounter occurred at Women’s Life Care Center in Little Canada, Minnesota, a partner clinic supported by Save the Storks. Toria arrived with her boyfriend, Joel, visibly anxious and uncertain, leaning toward abortion while feeling overwhelmed by her circumstances.
During her free ultrasound appointment, Toria learned she was 19 weeks pregnant. As she watched the screen, Toria focused on the image of her baby’s heart — a moment that changed everything. “Now that I’ve seen her, I just can’t abort her,” Toria said.
Following the appointment, the clinic connected Toria with a doctor referral list, insurance information and local food support resources. Before leaving, she scheduled a follow-up visit to continue receiving medical care and community support.
“Stories like Toria’s illustrate how access to compassionate, life-affirming healthcare can influence outcomes for women and families,” Ferraro said. “Sanctity of Life Month reminds us that protecting life means investing in care. When women receive truth-filled medical information in an environment of respect, they are empowered to choose hope.”
Save the Storks’ mission is to create a story of hope and empowerment for every woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. This national organization that started in 2012 focuses on four key areas of impact: Elevating women’s healthcare through strategic partnerships with pregnancy health clinics; Mobile Medical Clinics that bring women’s healthcare directly to where it is most needed; Church and Community partnerships; and the Digital Platform for women, offering 24/7 access with real care and real options.
