Angela’s Story of Rescue and Hope: Walking with a Trafficking Survivor

When “Angela” first came to Crossroads Care Center, she was six months pregnant and newly free from one of the most severe trafficking situations their community has encountered. According to law enforcement partners, Angela had been trafficked across 39 states before the age of 23. She was subjected to repeated abuse, drugging, isolation, and control. Her case was so extreme that it was later publicly reported as one of the worst trafficking cases in Oakland County.

By the time Angela reached the center’s doors, she carried far more than physical wounds. She bore deep emotional trauma, fear, and distrust—the lingering effects of years of manipulation and violence. Like many trafficking survivors, the abuse created circumstances that appeared—on paper—to be “voluntary.” But every aspect of her life had been controlled by her trafficker.

A Devastating Consequence of Trafficking Abuse

One of the most devastating consequences of Angela’s exploitation occurred when she gave birth to a child in Pennsylvania. Because drugs were still in her system, her newborn was immediately removed and placed into foster care. Despite clear evidence of trafficking-related abuse, the child welfare system initially treated her situation as neglect rather than victimization.

Angela could not navigate this alone.

Support Through Crossroads’ Survivor Program

Through Crossroads Care Center’s expanding prenatal and survivor care program, she was surrounded with medical, emotional, legal, material, and spiritual support. Recognizing the complexity of her situation, Crossroads’ Executive Director referred Angela to Save the Storks. Our National Partner, Safe House Project, provided her with immediate access to trafficking-informed guidance and resources.

The Safe House Project is a trusted national partner with deep expertise at the intersection of pregnancy and trafficking trauma.

As the urgency of Angela’s legal situation became clear, Crossroads’ Executive Director personally reached out to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, initiating inter-state coordination with Pennsylvania officials. At that time, paperwork was nearly finalized for Angela’s child to be permanently adopted out of the foster care system. Pennsylvania authorities initially indicated that nothing could be done to stop what had already been set in motion.

The Joseph Project Steps In

Simultaneously, The Joseph Project stepped in to provide pro bono, in-state legal representation, formally taking Angela’s case under their care. Additional advocacy from the Michigan Attorney General’s Children & Youth Services Division also helped reunify Angela with another child here in Michigan. This restored a critical piece of her motherhood and identity.

Walking Toward Restoration

Today, Angela is nearly full-term and preparing to give birth any day. She is enrolled in Crossroads Care Center’s abuse recovery counseling program, receiving prenatal care, baby supplies, and ongoing support as she rebuilds confidence and works toward employment. Through the collective efforts of Crossroads, multiple partner agencies, and God’s guidance, Angela recently shared a praise report: she is now anticipating reunification with her child by June of this year.

Crossroads continue to seek reliable transportation for Angela so she can maintain stability and independence.

Faith-Based Medical Care and Advocacy

This story is not yet finished, but it is already a powerful testament to what happens when faith-based medical care, legal advocacy, and national partnerships come together. Through God’s provision, and through organizations willing to stand in the gap, a woman once treated as invisible is being restored. As a mother, a survivor, and a person made in the image of God.

DEAR READER

We hope this article enlightened and inspired you to stand up for life.

Despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortions are still prevalent in our nation. As a response to the overturning, the media: from the news to entertainment sources to even political figures and celebrities, have pushed abortion as an ongoing agenda, shaping the way this generation thinks and acts. Misinformation is being spread every day, and people are sadly believing the lies.

Our articles and stories aim to tell one thing: the truth.

We know that it is both a blessing and a challenge to understand the reality of abortion, because knowledge incites belief, and belief incites action. But we’re in this together. We believe that we can make abortion unthinkable.

With your support, we look forward to a future where young women are empowered to fight for their own rights: a right to bring life into the world, to be fearless leaders, to be examples of hope, strength, and undeterred resilience. We look forward to a future where life can happen.

If this article strengthened your belief to reach women everywhere with the truth and to let life happen, then please consider helping us extend our reach by making a gift right now. Your gift of just $10 or $20 helps our mission to create a story of hope and empowerment for every woman facing an unplanned pregnancy.

We aim to create a culture that views “pro-life” as equivalent to having empathy and compassion, providing holistic care (before and beyond pregnancy) and education, and most importantly, choosing to speak and act in love. We are pro-life, pro-love, pro-woman, pro-solution.

Don’t just be part of the movement, be part of the solution, and give today.
