October 30, 2024 – ProPublica’s latest story is one laden with misinformation. In it, they claim that Josseli Barnica died due to delayed miscarriage treatment as a result of the Texas abortion ban.
The loss of Barnica, a woman who loved her family and was thrilled to bring another life into this world, is tragic. As our recent video explains, medical malpractice, not abortion laws, is the reason Barnica is not with us today.
Dr. Karysse Hutson, board-certified OB/GYN & National Medical Director at Save the Storks had this to say in response to ProPublica’s story:
“Today’s misleading media article regarding the death of Texas mom, Josseli Barnica, is an atrocious example of the left using a tragic death that occurred three years ago to now say that abortion restrictions caused her death. This is simply not true.
I want to set the record straight on women’s healthcare. Every doctor in America can provide maternal life-saving care in all pregnancy situations, regardless of if the cause of the complication is related to miscarriage, abortion or ectopic pregnancy.
Doctors take a Hippocratic Oath to care for their patients. That means if a mother’s life is in danger because of their pregnancy, she can receive medical care in every state even if it means a separation of the pregnancy must occur to save the life of the mother.
The left is twisting media to make it seem like women don’t receive the care they should because of states that have abortion restriction laws. A doctor did not take proper care of Joselli – that medical malpractice is what caused her death, not abortion restriction laws.”
Diane Ferraro, CEO at Save the Storks added:
“The tragic story of Josseli Barnica is being exploited and twisted. To honor Joselli’s story, the truth must be told. Her heartbreaking death was the result of inadequate care and medical complications following a miscarriage over three years ago. It had nothing to do with abortion
restrictions.”
