Seeking help for an unplanned pregnancy at 39 years old was the last thing on Monique’s Christmas to-do list, yet here she was. She discovered she was pregnant by a man she didn’t see herself raising a child with.
An Unexpected Pregnancy at 39
When she arrived at our partner clinic in Farmville, VA, she was overwhelmed and anxious, but a warm Southern accent in the client room helped calm her nerves. Slowly, she started opening up.
The only person she had told so far was the baby’s father, who remained noncommittal, telling her the choice was hers. She was more anxious about telling her parents. They were strong Christians, and she feared their disappointment the most.
At that point, abortion felt like the best option.
Walking Through the Decision
As Monique was guided through the Decision Guide, she continued to open up. She was gently encouraged to think through the weight of her decision – one that could impact her for a lifetime. She was encouraged to think about the support she likely didn’t even realize she had.
What if her parents were supportive?
What if the baby’s father wanted to be involved?
And beyond that, what if this baby was a blessing, and she wasn’t alone in this?
Still, one question lingered: Could she live with the decision of abortion?
A Different Response Than She Expected
After a positive pregnancy test and additional counseling, Monique remained undecided but agreed to return for a follow-up ultrasound after Christmas.
At her next visit, she walked in with a bright smile.
“I told my parents and my family, and they’re all happy! And the baby’s dad is happy! All of them say they’re going to support me!”
As she went through the Decision Guide again, she hesitated when the topic of abortion came up. She shared that if she or the baby faced medical complications, she might still consider it. Her excitement faded slightly as she realized she hadn’t fully let go of that possibility.
The Moment Everything Changed
As she lay on the ultrasound table, she grew quiet.
As the ultrasound began, her eight-week-old baby came into view on the screen.
Monique exclaimed,
“Is that my baby?”
When the nurse confirmed, she responded through tears,
“My baby is precious!”

Ongoing Pregnancy Support for the Journey Ahead
In that moment, something shifted. That day, Monique bonded with her baby. It was an instant connection that would stay with her. Before leaving, she enrolled in the Earn While You Learn program and received her first gift: a bag with diapers, wipes, and a handmade blanket she says will become an heirloom.
Like every baby, Monique’s baby is precious.
Something shifted in Monique’s heart. The difference was the change of heart, and the privilege of witnessing it.
