What does it mean to be pro-life?
At its center, the definition of pro-life is valuing all life, the life of the mother and their preborn child. Being pro-life means meeting women with compassion, care, and the support they need to move forward with confidence.
“Pro-Life” is a commitment to valuing every life. It means ensuring that no woman has to walk alone when facing an unplanned pregnancy.
What does it mean to be pro-life?
The Cambridge dictionary defines pro-life as “opposed to the belief that a pregnant woman should have the freedom to choose an abortion (= the intentional ending of pregnancy) if she does not want to have a baby.”
Despite this and political rhetoric, to be pro-life does not simply mean being anti-abortion.
To define “pro-life,” it is necessary to look at the term more holistically.
When Does Life Begin?
At the heart of the pro-life belief is a simple and important truth: life begins in the womb.
From the earliest stages of pregnancy, science shows that a new and unique human life is already developing. At conception, a distinct DNA is formed, different from both the mother and the father. Within just a few weeks, a heartbeat can be detected, and the foundation for every organ in the body begins to form.
This is why the pro-life perspective places such a deep value on life in the womb, not as a potential life, but as a human life already in progress.
For many, this belief is also rooted in faith. Scripture speaks to the value of life before birth, as seen in Psalm 139:13–14: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb… I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Whether through science, faith, or both, the pro-life belief begins with recognizing the inherent value of life in the womb.

What is pro-life?
It’s not just a noun, it’s an action. It’s not just a belief; it means dedicating yourself to serving mothers, babies, and promoting a culture of life in your community every day.
At Save the Storks, we are not simply an anti-abortion organization; we are promoting life, and a life lived to the fullest. We don’t just want to see a woman choose life, though this is a miraculous life-saving decision; we don’t take lightly. We also want to see her thrive.

Being pro-life means showing up for women in real and tangible ways. When you support this mission, you help ensure she is met with care rather than pressure.
What Pro-Life Is Not
After over fifty years of advocating for life, there are many misconceptions about the pro-life movement.
Here’s what it’s not:
- It’s not about forcing women to give birth.
- It’s not about abandoning a woman after she gives birth.
- It’s not about pressuring, guilting, or shaming a woman.
- It’s not just about the baby, and never the mother carrying the baby.
- It’s not about removing support or options.
On the contrary, this is what it really means to be pro-life:
- Giving women options when they feel like abortion is the only option.
- Giving them space, time, and a listening ear to decide on their own terms.
- Protecting the life and well-being of both babies and mothers.
- Showing women compassion, support, and encouragement.
- Giving them practical help before, during, and long after their pregnancy.

What Does “Life-Affirming” Mean?
Merriam Webster defines life-affirming as: “indicating that life has value: positive and optimistic.”
This isn’t far from the pro-life sentiment of the term. To be life-affirming means that we say “yes” to life in every aspect of life. When it comes to serving women, providing them with life-affirming care means offering both emotional and practical support so a woman feels empowered, informed, and never alone.
